Tatjana Pieters is delighted to present the gallery‘s first solo show of Belgian artist Johan De Wilde. Entitled TIR, the show entails a selection of recent drawings and photography. Known for his highly meticulous pencil drawings whereby the imagery re-/dis-appears through the imagination and eye of the beholder, De Wilde takes his topics from everyday situations he comes across, as well as historical events. The personal drawing technique the artist adapts, by obsessively building up each drawing line by line, makes his subject matter supersede its parochial character. Captured within this technique, the individual depictions of trees, houses, clouds, still-lifes, landscapes, ingredient lists, cooking recipes, religious texts, and historical icons start to act as ‘Gestalten’, revisiting their ‘original’ meaning by bringing them to an almost unconscious and dreamlike level. The reading of the subject matter at once becomes trapped between the abstract and the narrative, interrupting the seductive force of the imagery. The small and large movements in life become visible in the most invisible way. After graduating from the department Etching of the Academy in Ghent, Johan De Wilde (1964, lives and works in Gent) has been training himself to become an excellent draughtsman and connoisseur of literature and language, influencing the semiotic approach within his praxis. His work is part of several private and public collections, a.o. the collection of the S.M.A.K. Next to solo shows in Pocketroom, Antwerp and Croxhapox Gent, it has been shown in the several group shows: Uit het geheugen, Museum Dr Guislain, Gent (BE), Until My Darkness Goes..., LMAKprojects, New York (USA), Voorkamer, Lier (BE), New Media, Stephane Simoens Gallery, Knokke-Zoute (BE), The Aerials of Sublime Transscapes, Lokaal 01, Breda (NL), De visuele compositie van de plaats, Cultuurcentrum, Hasselt (BE), Belgier - aktuelle Kunst aus Belgien, Figge Von Rosen Galerie, Köln (DE). In 2009 Johan De Wilde was commissioned to design the Award Flemish Architect 2009, a series of drawings commissioned by the Flemish Government Architects Team as an award for the nominated architects.
During the opening the public will be invited to participate in an intervention that might transform a selection of the works on show.
