RELAAS VAN EEN MOMENTUM
2008 was zowel op macro- als op microschaal een bijzonder jaar. De macroschaal is u bekend, de microschaal is mijn verhaal als jonge galeriehoudster in de sector hedendaagse beeldende kunst. Als het cijfer 3 een spirituele betekenis heeft, dan heeft het dit zeker in mijn geval. Dit jaar ben ik niet alleen 30 geworden, maar bestaat mijn galerie ook 3 jaar – een gegeven waar ik toch wel trots op ben. Mijn galerie was en is een zoektocht met vallen en opstaan en het accepteren van toevallige ontwikkelingen en tegenslagen als opportuniteiten in plaats van risico’s. Het is het verhaal van een geloof in kunst, mensen, individu, talent, identiteit, kwaliteit, ondernemerschap en doorzettingsvermogen. Het is mijn relaas van een momentum.
Het woord ‘momentum’ is niet toevallig gekozen. Uit het Engels vertaald betekent het ‘hoeveelheid beweging, impuls, vaart, (stuw)kracht’. Het omschrijft de stroomversnelling waarin mijn galerie het afgelopen jaar is terechtgekomen en de dynamiek die ikzelf constant probeer na te streven. Ik beschouw mijn rol als galeriehoudster namelijk als een belangrijke missie, om niet te zeggen een noodzaak. Het is een opdracht die mij 24h per dag bezig houdt, soms tot grote ergernis van mijn naasten. Dit is niet altijd zo geweest. Iedereen heeft in zijn jeugd wel het scala doorgemaakt van wat hij zou willen worden later. Bij mij ging het van danseres naar advocate, om via een tussenstop in de Japanologie, Conservatie & Restauratie van Beeldhouwkunst te gaan studeren aan de Academie van Antwerpen, en vervolgens te eindigen in de richting Kunstwetenschappen aan de Universiteit Gent. Een interesse in – en zelfs praktische beoefening van – kunst & cultuur was er in al die tijd overduidelijk, maar geen haar op mijn hoofd dat er aan dacht om galeriehoudster te worden. Want, vond ik, hoe was het mogelijk dat iemand kon geloven dat kunst en economie verzoenbare begrippen waren? Bij toeval belandde ik dan toch in de galeriewereld. Als jobstudent in de tweede licentie mocht ik de deuren openhouden van een galerie die ondertussen zijn deuren gesloten heeft. Wat begon vanuit een financiële noodzaak, mondde al snel uit in een onvermijdelijk engagement. De eerste confrontatie met een internationale kunstenaar van hoog niveau, die niet alleen van zijn praktijk probeerde te leven, maar wiens praktijk gewoon zijn leven was, schudde mijn perceptie danig door elkaar. Mijn blik op de galerie als een noodzakelijk commercieel kwaad, veranderde in een beschouwing ervan als een ultieme en integere synthese van heel het traject dat ik voordien had afgelegd. Het werd mij duidelijk dat een galerie wel degelijk een essentieel onderdeel kan zijn in de ontwikkeling en begeleiding van de groei en zoektocht van de kunstenaar, en de integratie van zijn oeuvre in het systeem van de kunst in het bijzonder, en dat van de maatschappij in het algemeen.
Spanningsveld
Deze Aha-erlebnis ging echter niet zonder slag of stoot. De galerie waarvoor ik werkte stond qua visie en attitude diametraal tegenover de Londense galerie die toen optrad als haar artistieke consultant. Aan deze kant van het water was er de hobbyistische ‘marchand’ zonder duidelijke artistieke strategie en te grote commerciële honger en aan de andere kant de Oxfordiaanse ‘intellectueel’ met kunsthistorische en artistieke knowhow maar te weinig commerciële ruggengraat. In theorie klonk deze overzeese samenwerking beloftevol, maar in praktijk ontstond er een duidelijk spanningsveld tussen het commerciële en het artistieke luik van deze onderneming. De samenwerking is dan ook verleden tijd, maar leverde mij wel een goede leerschool én de kiem voor mijn galerie op. Vanuit de ervaring van deze twee extremen, wist ik namelijk welke synthese ikzelf wou bereiken, en in welke vorm: de promotie van jonge kunstenaars met het oog op verankering in zowel het museale als het marktcircuit en dit ook op internationaal niveau. Introductie lezing Trigger (Dutch only):
Ik heb ervoor gekozen om twee teksten voor de groepstentoonstelling Trigger te schrijven: de eerste tekst werd geschreven vóór de tentoonstelling en vertrok vanuit al bestaande kunstwerken van de geselecteerde kunstenaars die me onderuit hadden gehaald en een virtueel luik of ‘exposition imaginaire’ waarin de schilderkunst van Piero Della Francesca (1412-1492), de hyperboloïde structuren van Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov (1853-1939), de schilderkunst van Agnes Martin (1912-2004) en de tekeningen van Nashreen Mohamedi (1937-1990) aan bod komen. Een tweede tekst is ontstaan vanuit de verschillende werken op de tentoonstelling zelf. Deze tweede tekst en diens mogelijke triggerende spanning en verschuiving met de eerste zal als lezing op vrijdag 30 januari 2009 in One-Twenty Gallery worden gebracht en dit om 20u. |
